The building of AOPA began in the mid-1970's with the formation of the Australian Orthotic Association. In subsequent years significant work was undertaken to create the Australian Orthotic Prosthetic Association, highlighting the vision to represent all practitioners as a dual stream profession. The Association became Incorporated under the Incorporated Association's Act in 1989. Since this time, there have been significant advancements, including:
- moving from volunteers to National Office Staff to drive operational tasks;
- securing independent office space;
- the move to an Australian Registered Body; and
- becoming a Public Company Limited by Guarantee.
